Facilitation tips
Remote community meetings are notoriously unpredictable. They can be good, and the people involved get to walk away satisfied that something useful has happened. They can be spectacularly bad, and end with a shouting match. Or somewhere in between, where the sleeping community elder is a good sign the meeting hasn’t lived up to everyone’s expectations.
Involving community members as active participants in planning and running a meeting will increase the chances of it being a success. The Central Land Council (CLC) document covers some of the basic aspects of facilitating an effective meeting. The Queensland Government’s meeting guide also has some very practical advice that’s equally useful in the NT.
